Let's not get too uppity
And think that humankind
Is evolution's final goal.
And also bear in mind
That living things continue to
Evolve at different rates--
A process that natural
Selection orchestrates.
It's strange how we all started out--
And plants evolved as well--
A few billion years ago
As just a single cell.
We've come a long way since that time.
All life forms are linked.
But even so, a large percent
Of them are now extinct.
Think about molecular
Evolution, too.
It has backed up much of what
Darwin said was true.
We have common ancestors
With which we had connections
Before humans and apes branched out,
Going in different directions.
Although human molecules
Are closer to chimps' than to those
Of any other organism,
I do not suppose
That many people want to know that.
They would rather think
That they can prove that science is wrong
By screaming "Missing link!"
What if things had been reversed--
That after many ages,
Chimps had gained the upper hand,
And put us in their cages?
